Altered States of the United Snakes (AS*US) “Executive Suites” EP
If I gave this a blind listen, I’d probably guess that it’s a Columbus, Ohio release. I’m not sure what that says except maybe that there is some groupthink going on among the city’s musicians. On this demo, AS*US have the following going for them: great color copied collage artwork, endearingly sloppy hand-written notes (lyrics, I think, but the emphasis here is in the slop), and the music has its moments—“Radio. Tape. Deck.” and “Coat of Arms” stand out. But the highlights are buried among the unnecessarily long jams that dominate the disc and make listening a chore. The twelve minute “Executive Suites” is particularly painful and the twenty-four minute live set at the end blends into a single, unmemorable track (even the reprised versions of songs that I like from the studio material drag here).(DH)

My Uncle Wayne - Beat Hits

Thanks to the conspirators of the Autistic Theater the public is now well equipped with a treasure trove of booty from “the slump” that occurred in Columbus. While it’s nice to hear the evolution of AS/US, it’s even better to hear that group’s primordial roots. I’m speaking of MY UNCLE WAYNE. In my experience as a “slump” explorer, these three men could usually do no wrong -- through they’d sit on stage constantly wronging the world around them. Anyone who had the pleasure/brain damage getting close and intimate at those turn-of-the-century Bernie’s soirees might know what I’m talking about – rarely in tune, forcibly out of tune, in continual catch-up with their own rhythms, missing strings, rambling fuck-outs, rolling eyelids, quarter-consciousness, beer and whisky rivers, drug swamps. Were they the Butthole Surfers as prodigious math-rockers, or, Polvo as wasted cretins? Each set lasted just long enough to get irritated, but eagerly awaiting what would happen the next time they stumbled onto that dank basement stage.

And back to the Autistic Theater, where currently you can procure a copy of the group’s shining moment (previously released anyways, excited to finally hear the other stuff), the Beat Hits 7” on Seldom Scene (Bim Thomas’ short-lived label, and here the Bassholes/This Moment skinsman plays drums). After listening to this you may want to ignore my descriptors, then again you’d need to see them live to get that particular not-so-fresh feeling, on Beat Hits though they’re firing on all cylinders like a resurrected war machine from the Soviet era. Serious blasted – almost disintegrating all the pigfuck and trash-punk pioneers that lay track before them (see Monster Truck 5) in the fleeting first minutes of the “Vulture of Yr Culture” and “Pilgrum Soul” one-two swing. Giving those songs an angular snarl without too much angle, a metal edge without jaking-on like Karp, and the Sonic Youth seal of distortion with nary an ounce of pretension and pose. “All I See is Chrome” fits that model again, with much more muscle and instrumental possibilities. A solid winner from front to back. I’m sure you can find some “real” copies if you look hard enough.

Those looking for the twisted Truman’s Water-esque version of the band, urge them to upload the impossible-to-find Delusions of Grandure 7” – proving they have heart. Then again I want to hear the work they did with Rep and Jim Shepard right towards the end. And why was there an end? The world shall never know.

ATAT #105(B)MyUncleWayne*colonial hills 7"lovinglyfuckedwithby Mike Rep

My Uncle Wayne.
Colonial HIlls 7"

side b:
trk:1. Pilgrim Soul

This song,
as well as another(FANCY LINES),
were written for the MIKE REP SESSIONS.
Both songs were re-recorded in full wayne manor. Pilgrim Soul was released on the "Beat Hits" single as well as the unreleased "EXILEDfromOHIO" lp. Fancy Lines(rep version) was never released(until the post below).Fancy Lines full spectrum sound version was placed on the unreleased "EXILEDfromOHIO" lp as well(will post someday).

Mike Mckeegan:Guitar
Davey HIghben:Guitar/voice.
REP:tapes/Organ.

*Funny thing about fancy lines. like I said I was working out the details of this song days before I was to record it with Mike. I had most of the lyrics in place except for the very end. I was sitting by the window, that looked out on to
Summit St. going through it over and over.
at this time I had this cat "oscar stanly". The window was open, it was summer, mmm, things were getting going, when all of a sudden the cat jumps up into the window from the street below (a good 5 and one half feet). There on the sill was the cat with a Live Crow, bigger than he, in his mouth.
Oscar let the crow go and it proceeded to fly around the little apartment.

and just like that the song was finished.
see below.

I was interrupted by the crow
that oscar stanly brought home
coincidence?

All I really remember about these sessions was that Mike had just got this new four track he was going to "try out" on us. I really didn't know who Mike was at the time I was pretty new to town. He insisted that we record acoustically, which was fine for me since i wrote everything that way. Well Right off the bat Mike was having problems with his new equipment and after about 45 minutes of fuckery he was ready to go...but first!!! Mike looked like he was struck with the revelation of a lifetime, or rather that moment and in a dash he sprang from his stool, mysteriously produced a joint and turned out the shop lights at the exact same time. Then with a clap, dashing Christmas lights came about and chased themselves around the store with clouds of smoke filling the room. It was at this time Jenny Mae showed up with trumpet in one hand and a practically empty bottle of Gin(?)in the other- it might of been whiskey-I don't remember, I'm no journalist!

Forever since then when ever I see Mike he usually makes some side comment at some time, that usually questions why I never did more with these sessions, the "tossing of the coals", as he liked to call it, but truth be told- I always felt more comfortable singing behind a twisting, turning, churning, morphing, wall of sound and recording with Mike took that all away,It left me vulnerable in the realization of all that was transpiring around me at that point and time in my life...(what the hell am I talking about?)
anyway,
so here it goes...

enjoy.

"...I imagine I could yet I never do,
when I'm alone at home I sit around
and think of you...la la la la la la ..."

ALTERED STATES of the UNITED SNAKES (AS*US) "Exectutive Suites" CD
((SIC))Take of some of the drugs that Pink Reason has lived on and give them to Skip Spence when he was recording "Oar". Sure, Skip's brain was mess up on all kinda who knows what but the things people were burning up their braincells up on back then look like Vitamin Water compared to some of the toxic things people today ingest for a buzz no matter how damaging the not so long term effects . Then imagine if Neil Young heard the results of such a thing while he was on tour with Sonic Youth (the only time I've even seen Neil live but something like the 5th for SY) and the idea of putting together a rural route influenced doom rock band together.
Critics and his label would've buried the thing but eventually people like the Altered States of the United Snakes would dig it back up and declare it theirs.
Feedback gives way to tape loops that then gives way to rattly acoustic guitars and pie tin cymbal crashes. It gets noisier as it goes on culminating with AmRep recorded on one bargain priced mic slime. And that's just the first song. Calling Columbus, Ohio their place to live they fit right in in the college town that bands like El Jesus de Magico, Necropolis, the Unholy Two and Psychedelic Horseshit also lay their hat.((SIC))
